Üsküdar Mayor Mustafa Kara has performed a marriage in which the parties responded to his questions in messages posted on Twitter.

The marriage between Cengizhan Çelik, the social media editor of the news portal ensonhaber.com, and Candan Canik was officiated via Twitter on Monday in the unusual ceremomy.

Hundreds of guests who gathered at a restaurant in Üsküdar to celebrate the couple's wedding watched on an LCD screen as the bride, groom and mayor -- all present in the restaurant -- “tweeted” the ceremony online.

Kara asked Çelik and Canik in a tweet whether they took each other to be lawful wedded wife and husband. Both responded “I do,” via tweets. They became the first couple in Turkey whose marriage was officiated on Twitter.

After the online “wedding ceremony,” Kara handed the marriage certificate to Candan and wished the couple prosperity and happiness.
