The İstanbul Earthquake Early Warning and Rapid Response System is to be partially renewed with state-of-the-art equipment to cope with quakes in a more efficient manner.
The equipment is being provided by the İstanbul Project Coordination Unit (İPKB) of the İstanbul Special Provincial Administration. After the renewal of the system, a substitute data storage system will be prepared and placed at the City Disaster Management Center at the İstanbul Governor’s Office, located in Hasdal, the İPKB said in a statement on Tuesday.
While nearly all the equipment has been supplied, the system will be operational in October. The renewed system will collect data from further to the east and west of İstanbul. With the new software, the İstanbul Provincial Disaster and Emergency Directorate will be informed on damage prediction in the event of an earthquake more quickly and accurately.
In addition, the number of strong ground motion recording devices, which are placed in critical structures including bridges, airports and hospitals, will be increased. The collected data will be included in the early warning system, paving the way for a quicker and more reliable data flow to relevant authorities.
