The new Centuries-Old Tastes and Crafts Street opened in İstanbul's Sultanahmet neighborhood on Thursday as part of efforts to reintroduce or promote traditional crafts during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins today.

The street was officially opened by İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş, along with Fatih District Governor Hasan Karakaş and Fatih Mayor Mustafa Demir, who then toured the street and spoke with shopkeepers there. After learning about the products on offer, Topbaş selected several to gift to his companions.

The hippodrome will host the “street” during the holy month of Ramadan, complete with shops that sell traditional wares such as handicrafts of glass, ebru painting, Turkish ceramics, calligraphy, carpet weaving, nacre and porcelain.

Age-old professions that are being forgotten will also be promoted here throughout the holy month of Ramadan, and visitors will also have the chance to watch as the crafts are made by dexterous hands.
