The Turkish lawyer of a suspected member of al-Qaeda, Osman Karahan, was killed during clashes between the Syrian military and opposition forces in Aleppo last week.
Karahan had recently joined Syrian opposition forces and was known for being the lawyer of Louai Sakka, who is standing trial on charges of participating in a series of İstanbul bombings in November of 2003 and is accused of being a top al-Qaeda official. Karahan's death was confirmed by his brother, Selahattin Karahan.
Syrian officials earlier announced that those killed in the Aleppo clashes included Afghan and Turkish opposition fighters. In 2006, Karahan was charged with aiding and abetting al-Qaeda in Turkey, but was later released due to lack of evidence.
