Turkey's Supreme Election Board (YSK) has annulled the results of an election held by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) for the Party Council (PM) during a two-day congress, ordering a recount of the votes.
In the first round of the congress on Tuesday, incumbent leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was re-elected chairman of the party after he secured the support of a crushing majority of delegates. Kılıçdaroğlu's re-election was indeed no surprise as he was the sole candidate for the post.
The second round of the congress was held on Wednesday, when delegates voted for candidates who sought to join the CHP's 60-member PM. Around 600 candidates vied for a seat on the council and party delegates elected 60 candidates on Wednesday.
In a decision that came as a surprise for many, the YSK said on Thursday that the votes we miscounted and cancelled the PM elections and ordered the party to hold a recount. Three candidates -- Fikri Sağlar, İlhan Cihaner and Ercan Karakaş -- who were not included on the 100-member list of candidates prepared by Kılıçdaroğlu had made into the top CHP body according to Wednesday's election results.
