The leader of the Sept. 12, 1980 military coup and former President Kenan Evren will not be able to attend the Sept. 12 coup trial.
A medical report issued by Ankara University's School of Medicine Hospital stated that Evren's health does not permit him to attend hearings.
The Sept. 12, 1980 military coup was the bloodiest in Turkey and greatly affected the country, more than any other coup in Turkey's history. A total of 650,000 people were detained and police kept files on 1,683,000 individuals.
A total of 230,000 people were tried in 210,000 cases during the coup period, mostly for political reasons. A further 517 were sentenced to death out of 7,000 people who faced charges that carried a possible death sentence. Of those who received the death penalty, 50 were executed. Another 299 people died while in police custody as a result of unsanitary conditions and torture.
