Egyptian Defense Minister Sedki Sobhi met Monday with his Greek counterpart, Panos Kammenos, to discuss means of boosting cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting comes days before Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi is scheduled to meet Greek Prime Minster Alexis Tsipras in Cyprus on April 29.

"Defense Minister Sedki Sobhi met with Greek counterpart Panos Kammenos, who is currently visiting Egypt accompanied by a high-level delegation – including Greek army Chief Mikhail Kostarakos – for an official visit that will last several days," Egyptian army spokesman Mohamed Samir said in a statement.

"The meeting tackled regional developments and shifts taking place on the regional and international fronts and their impact on the security and stability of the Middle East, as well as means of boosting mutual cooperation between the two countries," Samir said.

"The two sides also discussed ways of fostering military cooperation that include joint military exercises and the exchange of expertise," he added.

Kammenos, for his part, said that cooperation with the Egyptian armed forces was of strategic importance to Greece as a means of guaranteeing regional stability, Samir said.

The Greek defense minister also referred to the "deep ties between the two countries," adding that he looked forward to "further cooperation" in the upcoming stage.

On Sunday, the Egyptian presidency said al-Sisi would hold a trilateral summit on April 29 with Tsipras and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades in Cyprus.
