Sunday's release of 30 Fatah-affiliated detainees from Hamas government prisons was an effort to clear a path for national dialogue at the upcoming Cairo talks, according to de facto government spokesperson Tahir An-Nunu.
The released political prisoners included several Fatah leaders and the Governor of Gaza City Mohammad Salem Qudwah, Palestinian Ma'an news agency said.
An-Nunu explained in a press conference in Gaza City on Sunday night that the release came as a response to the call from deputy PLC speaker Ahmad Bahar along with other Hamas lawmakers and Palestinian members of Israeli Knesset to release all those who have been arrested on account of their political affiliation.
Given the clear efforts of the de facto government, said An-Nunu, the actions of the West Bank government - summoning Hamas-affiliated women to police departments and threats to use force against the Gaza Strip – should be re-evaluated.
