A junior coalition partner in Greek Cyprus's left-wing government quit on Monday, accusing Greek Cypriot President Demetris Christofias of making "concessions" to Turkish Cypriots in reunification talks.

"We cannot endorse damaging strategies ... leaving this government is the politically responsible and morally right thing to do," Socialist EDEK Chairman Yiannakis Omirou told a party conference.

 The departure does not mean early elections since Greek Cyprus has a presidential system of government with a strong executive. Analysts said it was also unlikely to affect the reunification talks because EDEK's opposition to Christofias's negotiation tactics were well known from before.
