At least 11 people have been confirmed dead in a new boat mishap in Nigeria's central Niger State, according to the local disaster management agency.
"Out of the 18 people on board the boat travelling between Garafini-Kodo and Garafini river side of Borgu local government, 11 died when the boat capsized," Mohammed Shaba, a government official manning the agency, told reporters on Tuesday.
"There were seven survivors who have been treated and allowed to go home," he added.
Shaba did not disclose the cause of the accident which had occurred late Monday.
Boat accidents are rampant in Nigeria, largely because most riverine travel is done via wooden canoes.
Motorized flying boats, too, are not immune from accidents – especially at night – due to poor lightning and excessive speeds.
Last year alone, more than ten major boat mishaps were reported in Nigeria.
Last September, more than 42 people were killed and 100 went missing following a major boat mishap in Niger State.Last Mod: 04 Haziran 2014, 10:05
