At least 18 people were killed and several others injured when a fire swept through a South African retirement home near Johannesburg, emergency officials said on Monday.

Scores were rescued from the blaze that took place late on Sunday at the home in Nigel, southeast of Johannesburg. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
