Two Egyptian policemen were killed in a shooting attack in the country's restive northeastern Sinai Peninsula on Sunday, the country's Interior Ministry said.

"Unidentified gunmen riding a taxi opened fire at the two policemen near their police station in Arish city, leading to their death," the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

A security source told The Anadolu Agency earlier that the attack left one policeman dead and another wounded.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

For the past year, the Egyptian army has waged a major offensive against militant groups said to be based in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The region has seen a spate of attacks by unknown militants on security personnel since last year's ouster of Mohamed Morsi – Egypt's' first freely elected president – by the army, one of the deadliest of which left 31 troops dead last month.
