Two Egyptian fishermen were killed and two others injured in an attack on a fishing boat in Port Said in eastern Egypt early Saturday, a security source has said.

"A fishing boat came under fire at 03:00a.m. (01:00 GMT)," the source told Anadolu Agency.

"Two people were killed and two others injured in the attack," the source said.

There has been no claim of responsibility and it remains unclear whether criminal or political motives were behind the attack.

Egypt has been in turmoil since the military ousted democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi last year.

In recent months, militants have mounted attacks against security forces and government institutions, particularly in the Sinai Peninsula.

Last month, at least 31 soldiers were killed and scores injured in a daring attack on a military checkpoint in the northern Sinai Peninsula, prompting Egyptian authorities to declare a three-month state of emergency and to launch a military offensive to hunt down militants said to be in the area.
