Forty internally displaced persons have been confirmed dead in Nigeria's northeast Taraba state after their boat capsized.
"They were among the people fleeing from the violence in Dampa village," Adamu Ishaka, the chairman of Ibi local council area of the state, told reporters late Wednesday.
"They were trying to escape from the violence but the boat they were travelling in capsized midway and everyone drowned," he added, putting the death toll at 40.
Several gunmen had reportedly invaded Dampa early Wednesday, causing many to scamper to safety.
It is not clear how many people died in the early morning raid.
Police spokesman Joseph Kwaji confirmed the boat incident but couldn't give a death toll.
"We heard about the boat incident and marine police have since been deployed to the area," he told Anadolu Agency.
"Security has been beefed up in the area," Kwaji added.
Taraba has recently witnessed surge in violence described by many as ethno-religious.
Police had confirmed 15 dead in last Sunday violence in Wukari local government area of the state.Last Mod: 19 Haziran 2014, 10:11
