A South Sudanese army general on Tuesday defected to the opposition led by rebel leader Riek Machar.

"Salva Kiir is a brute," Gen. Mabior Marial Makuei told a press conference in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

"Our people are still suffering after independence,” Makuei, who is a Dinka, said, claiming that the South Sudanese government was killing people indiscriminately.

Makuei, a war-hardened general, said the Dinka people were being targeted grossly and that the conflict is not an ethnic one.

"This has not been done by the British and by the Sudanese government before independence," he said.

South Sudan has been shaken by violence since last December, when President Kiir accused Machar, his sacked vice president, of plotting to overthrow his regime.

Hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese have since been displaced in fighting between the two rivals, leading to an increasingly dire humanitarian situation countrywide.

In recent months, the warring camps have held on-again, off-again peace talks in Addis Ababa under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a Djibouti-based East African regional bloc.

Asked in what capacity the general would serve the party, rebel negotiator Dhieu Mathok said he is a renowned general who fought many battles and his coming to the party was a plus.

Mathok said that his party would remain committed to make peace in South Sudan.

"We are expecting to conclude our consultations soon," he said, blaming logistics for having delayed the consultations.

The IGAD-led peace talks went on recess and were scheduled to reconvene on November 28 after a 15-day recess for consultations.

"They will conclude their consultations and the talks would reconvene very soon," an IGAD official told Anadolu Agency earlier.
