The African Union (AU) on Tuesday launched an agricultural action plan aimed at realizing the agricultural transformation of Africa.

It was announced by AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture Tumusiime Rhoda Peace at a press briefing held on the sidelines of an AU Executive Council meeting, which is scheduled to wrap up on Tuesday.

She said the Accelerated Africa Agriculture Growth and Transformation plan – proposed by heads of state and government at a summit in Equatorial Guinea in June of last year – has now entered the implementation phase.

"I am delighted to report that we delivered the Strategy and Roadmap, which the AU policy organs considered and adopted this week," Peace said.

"This… places us in the phase of transformative implementation," which, she added, would be officially launched later on Tuesday.

"The 2014 AU Year of Agriculture enabled us to move ahead of the rest of the sectors, most of which are just beginning to define their implementation plan for the first decade of Africa Agenda 2063," she said.

"The Malabo Declaration's Implementation Strategy and Roadmap does just that for the attainment of the goal of ending hunger by 2025," she added.

According to Peace, the roadmap's two main objectives are the transformation of agriculture and sustained inclusive growth; and strengthened systemic capacity to implement and deliver results.
