At least six people were killed and seven others injured when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive-laden vehicle outside Mogadishu airport, a police spokesman has said.
"The blast killed five people, including a police officer, along with the bomber," spokesman Qassim Ahmed told a press conference in Mogadishu.
"The blast also caused severe damage to parked cars and nearby buildings," he added.
Ahmed said the police officer had been killed when he tried to stop the driver of the explosive-packed vehicle.
He also asserted that the authorities would "pursue the remnants of the Al-Shabaab militant group," although he stopped short of blaming the group for the bombing.
Reliable sources told The Anadolu Agency that the bomb had gone off as a UN convoy passed nearby, but that no casualties had been reported among its passengers.
The airport has a tight security cordon and blast walls, and is used as a base for U.N. operations in Somalia. The airport area is also the home to the British and Italian embassies.Last Mod: 03 Aralık 2014, 12:07
