Blast rocks Kenya's Mombasa, several wounded

Several people were injured late on Thursday after an explosion rocked Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa, police and eyewitness said.

Mombasa county police chief Robert Kirui told Anadolu Agency that a police officer was among the injured.

The explosion went off at the usually busy Biashara street.

An eyewitness and resident of the area told AA he had heard gunshots immediately after the blast.

Kirui said that police had arrested one suspect but could not confirm causalities or the reported gunshots.

Mombasa has recently been the target of several deadly bombings.

On May 3, a man left a plastic bag near a prominent beach hotel in Mombasa. After he left, the bag exploded without causing injuries. Moments later, a grenade was hurled at a bus in Mombasa, killing four and wounding many others.

In March, gunmen stormed a church in Likoni near Mombasa, killing two people on the spot and hurting four others who later succumbed to their injuries.

Kenyan authorities blame the attacks on Somalia's rebel Al-Shabaab group, which demands that Nairobi withdraw its troops – dispatched in 2011 – from Somalia.
