Six separatists were killed Tuesday in clashes between the Burundian army and gunmen from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that erupted in Burundi's northwestern Cibitoke province, according to a military source.

Heavy gunfire can still be heard, particularly in the hills of Nyamabuye Mubimbi, located in the Murwi district of Cibitok on the border with the DRC, Burundian army spokesman Col. Gaspard Baratuza said

"The attackers, whose numbers are estimated at around 200, wanted to cross the Congolese border to exploit the natural resources of the Kibira region on the Burundian side," Baratuza said.

"Several of the attackers were dressed in fatigues similar to those worn by the Congolese army," he added.

Baratuza went on to say that the inhabitants of the hills and their surrounding areas had fled to Murwi under the protection of Burundian troops, as they feared for their own safety.

"This is obviously part of a well-planned war, given the number of attackers and their equipment," one Murwi resident told The Anadolu Agency.

The attacks have yet to be claimed by any group.
