Burundi opposition halts dialogue with gov't

World Bulletin / News Desk

The Burundian opposition has decided to suspend dialogue with the government on the country's lingering political crisis following the assassination of a leading opposition figure a day earlier.

"There will be no dialogue in a sea of blood and under the threat of killing," an umbrella group of opposition parties and civil society organizations said in a statement on Sunday.

No Burundian official was immediately available for comment on the announcement.

On Saturday, Zedi Feruzi, the leader of the opposition Union for Peace and Democracy Party, was killed in a drive-by shooting outside his home in capital Bujumbura.

The attack also left Feruzi's bodyguard dead and two policemen injured.
