The vice-president of Burundi's Constitutional Court, which is responsible for ruling on the constitutionality of a re-election bid by President Pierre Nkurunziza, has fled the country to Rwanda, a source close to the judge said.
"For the past two or three days, Judge Sylvere Nimpagaritse said that he and his family are threatened in relation to his work," Anaclet Ndikuriyo, a close relative of the judge, told reporters on Tuesday.
According to Ndikuriyo, the senior judge took his wife and children to Rwanda on Monday.
Sources with an activist group opposing Nkurunziza's candidacy confirmed that Nimpagaritse had fled the country.
Earlier, Nimpagaritse told reporters that the judges of the Constitutional Court had been under pressure from senior officials to endorse Nkurunziza's candidacy, something that he refused to do.Last Mod: 05 Mayıs 2015, 12:19
