Unidentified gunmen on Sunday shot dead a Christian cleric while he was heading a Sunday service at a church in Kenya’s second largest city, Mombasa, police said.
"What we know from eyewitnesses is that the gunmen were on a motorbike. They entered the church targeting a pastor who was preaching at the time of the incident," Mombasa Island police chief Geoffrey Mayek told The Anadolu Agency.
The gunmen escaped on a motorbike towards Mombasa's mainland following the incident with the congregation left in shock, the police said.
Police have identified the site of the attack as Maximum Revival Center in Majengo neighborhood. The church is guarded by police officers as investigation were launched.
In March of last year, four people were killed at a Mombasa church when gunmen attacked a Sunday congregation. The attack was blamed on Somali-based Al-Shabaab militant group but it later turned out to be instigated by church rivalry.
Mombasa has a majority Muslim population and the city's churches have in the past been targeted by rioting youths following the killing of Muslim clerics.
