"The death toll from the attack on Bardo Museum rose to 23," the source told the Tunisian radio.
Gunmen attacked the museum, located near the parliament headquarters, on Wednesday and took several hostages.
Security forces, however, managed to end the crisis and killed two gunmen holed up in the building.
At least 17 foreign tourists were among those killed in the attack, including citizens from Italy, Japan, Poland and Spain.
There has been no claim of responsibility for Wednesday's attack.
In 2002, at least 14 people, including seven foreign tourists, were killed in an attack on a Jewish synagogue in western Tunisia.
