East African leaders will be meeting in Nairobi on Thursday to discuss a number of joint projects including a cross-border rail link and regional security.

"We are expecting the presidents of Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan," Kenyan Foreign Ministry spokesman Edwin Limo told The Anadolu Agency on Wednesday.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta will preside over the eighth summit of the Northern Corridor Integration Projects, an initiative designed to drum up the political will necessary to fast-track implementation of certain development projects.

"Heads of state will meet to discuss the standard-gauge railway that will link the four countries, immensely enhancing trade and transport in the region," Limo said.

"Leaders will also speak about other projects in the region, among them information and communications technology infrastructure and how to enhance defense in the region," he added.

The first summit was hosted by Uganda in June 2013, where leaders agreed to meet every two months to review progress on the implementation of 14 projects, including the high-profile railway scheme.
