An Egyptian policeman was shot dead early Saturday in a Cairo suburb, an Interior Ministry spokesman has said.

"A 'terrorist' element opened fire on a security man guarding a bank in al-Mohandeseen district," Hani Abdel-Latif told The Anadolu Agency.

He said that a manhunt has been launched for the attacker.

A security source earlier told the official MENA news agency that two assailants on a motorbike had opened fire on security forces guarding two banks in al-Mohandeseen.

According to the source, a security man had been killed and another injured in the attack.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, the bodies of two residents of Arish city – bearing gunshot wounds to the head – have been found in the northeastern Sinai Peninsula, a medical source said Friday.

"The bodies were brought to the Rafah general hospital with gunshot wounds to the head," the medical source, who requested anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency.

Eyewitnesses said the bodies had been found in the Al-Mahdeyya region southeast of Rafah city.

Responsibility for the attack has yet to be claimed by any group.

For more than one year, Egypt has waged a massive military campaign in the restive peninsula – which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip – amid a spate of militant attacks on security personnel.

Egypt has been dogged by instability since the army unseated elected President Mohamed Morsi last year following massive opposition protests against his one-year rule.
