Former Muslim Brotherhood supreme guide Mohamed Mahdi Akef (85) has been moved from Cairo's Tora Prison to a military hospital for treatment, a security source told Anadolu Agency on Thursday.

The move came after Prosecutor-General Hisham Barakat approved a request from Akef's lawyer, Hasan Karim, to move the 85-year-old Islamist leader to a medical facility.

Akef will remain at the military hospital for two days, according to the source.

On Wednesday, Karim said the former Brotherhood leader had suffered "malaise" due to his solitary confinement and old age.

Akef is currently being held at Cairo's Tora Prison on charges of "inciting violence."

The Brotherhood leader will be treated at the same hospital in which toppled president Hosni Mubarak is being held under house arrest.
