Unknown gunmen reportedly attacked the Wajir town in northern Kenya late Tuesday, exchanging heavy gunfire with the police.

Initial reports suggested there had been blasts in the town, but the Kenya Red Cross said it was a shoot-out between gunmen and the local police.

Earlier in the evening, TV and radio stations flashed breaking news of bomb blasts in the town and that up to three people had been injured.

There has been no official government statement on the Wajir incident.

The town is located in the northern part of the country inhabited by pastoralists, most of them Muslims.

The area was recently the scene of violent clan conflicts which left scores of people dead.
