Kenyan police on Wednesday arrested the governor of Lamu County Issa Timamy over last week's attack in the coastal city of Mpeketoni, in which more than 60 people were killed.
"The governor has been transferred to Mombasa and will remain under police custody," a Criminal Investigation Officer in Lamu told Anadolu Agency, requesting anonymity.
"He is to be investigated to ascertain if he has any links to the attacks in Mpeketoni and Kibaoni," the officer said.
Timamy's arrest came as soon as he arrived in Lamu from the capital Nairobi where he had reportedly met with Deputy President William Ruto.
The governor had been earlier summoned to record a statement with the police.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed the governor's arrest via its Twitter account late Wednesday.
Timamy, the highest-ranking official to be arrested over the Mpeketoni attack, is expected to be arraigned before the Mombasa Law courts on Thursday.
Ten people have been arrested in connection with the attack, which the government has blamed on "political incitement" despite the Somali group claimed responsibility for it.Last Mod: 26 Haziran 2014, 10:16
