A retired army general was shot dead in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Saturday, a medical source said.

Rt. Gen. Khalafallah al-Warfali was killed in al-Magouri district by unidentified assailants, the source in the Benghazi General Hospital told Anadolu Agency.

There was no claim of responsibility and Libyan authorities have yet to comment on the attack.

Benghazi has been the scene of mounting crime and militancy since the 2011 ouster of strongman Muammar Gaddafi.

The eastern city has also witnessed fighting between forces loyal to retired army general Khalifa Haftar and Islamist militias that have become a common feature of post-Gaddafi Libya.
