"The militants ambushed Col. Abid Mansour al-Awami while he was on the way to work," a security source said, adding that the slain officer had been responsible for personnel affairs at the security directorate.
Al-Awami's body was later taken to Al-Galaa Hospital in Benghazi, according to Fadia al-Bargathi, head of media at the hospital.
She added that the 49-year-old al-Awami had apparently been killed by a gunshot wound to the head.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for al-Awami's murder.
