Madagascar's parliament has voted to impeach President Hery Rajaonarimampianina for "incompetence" and violating the country's constitution.
Parliament Speaker, Jean Max Rakotomamonjy, said late on Tuesday that 121 members of parliament voted in favor of withdrawing confidence from Rajaonarimampianina, while four MPs only voted against the motion.
He added that the decision would be sent to the Constitutional Court to decide whether it would enact it.
"Rajaonarimampianina took two entire months to appoint [former] Prime Minister Roger Kolo, only to sack him eight months later and replace him with Jean Ravelonarivo, a businessman whose appointment had not been based on consensus," an MP told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity.
"Moreover, the president violated the constitution by disrespecting the country's principles of secularism and separation of powers."
Last week, 115 out of 151 MPs signed a petition demanding the president's impeachment.
Rajaonarimampianina was inaugurated in January of last year after winning a democratic presidential vote.
