The main suspect in a failed assassination attempt on renegade Libyan general Khalifa Haftar has been arrested, a pro-Haftar spokesman said Wednesday.
"We've arrested the main suspect in the suicide bombing that targeted the command base of general Haftar in the eastern city of Benghazi last week," Col. Mohamed Hegazi told Anadolu Agency by phone.
He added that the suspect, who was arrested late on Tuesday, confessed that he was the mastermind of the bombing.
Hegazi refused, however, to reveal the identity of the suspect and the group behind the failed attempt on Haftar's life.
He said two other suspects had been arrested two days ago, noting that investigations were underway about the botched attempt.
Haftar has declared war on militias in the eastern parts of his country more than a month ago, but the Libyan government has called his campaign a "coup'.
He was the target of an assassination attempt last week, but he emerged unscathed, except for minor injuries in his arm.
