The army has said that rebels in Mali have blown up a bridge in Bentia over the River Niger. The bridge was the only crossing from the city of Gao to neighboring Niger.

Rockets were also fired into the city of Gao on Monday.

An Islamist group called Mujao has claimed responsibility for the bombing, according to the AFP news agency.

Rebels spurred on by both Islamist insurgents and Tuareg separatists controlled most of northern Mali until France sent troops to help the Malian government reclaim its lost territory last year.

France now plans to withdraw all but 1000 troops from Mali, who will stay behind along with a 6000-stong UN peacekeeping team.
