Malian killed in southern Algeria violence

Since last December, Ghardaia – located 600km south of capital Algiers – has been the scene of on-again, off-again sectarian violence between Arabs and Berber residents.

A Malian citizen was found dead in Algeria's southern Ghardaia province on Wednesday following sectarian violence in the area, a medical source said.

"The 22-year-old victim was killed during violence in Berriane town, 45km north of Ghardaia," the source told Anadolu Agency.

He said that the Malian national had been killed on Tuesday.

The fatality comes two days after two people were killed in the same town, bringing the death toll from sectarian violence since Sunday to four people along with a policeman. Scores of people were injured in the violence.

Since last December, Ghardaia – located 600km south of capital Algiers – has been the scene of on-again, off-again sectarian violence between Arabs and Berber residents.

The violence has so far killed ten people and led to massive riots.
