Central Africa Republic's interim President Michel Djotodia has resigned following inter-religious violence that has gripped his country.

His resignation was announced alongside that of PM Nicolas Tiengaye at a regional summit on Friday.

He had been the president since seleka rebels brought him to power in March 2013 after performing a coup on the government.

Coming from CAR’s Muslim minority, which makes up 20% of the country’s population, he was the first Muslim president of the country. He faced much opposition from the majority of Christians in CAR, with anti-balaka Christian militias launching a campaign against the Muslim seleka.

France sent troops tosist neighboring countries quell the violence in December, but has been accused of bias towards the Christian militias against the Muslim seleka.
