A bloc backing ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi on Sunday called on Egypt's workers and farmers to mark the Egyptian Farmers' Day on Tuesday by staging protests nationwide.

The National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, Morsi's main support bloc, called on the country's farmers and workers to stage protests under the banner of "Uprising of the Poor."

"We call on Egypt's farmers and workers to strongly respond to the invitation and to participate in the 'Uprising of the Poor' on September 9," the alliance said in a statement.

Egyptian farmers celebrate their day on September 9 every year, which marks the issuance of an agricultural reform law by late president Gamal Abdel-Nasser almost 62 years ago.

"The current authorities have never been supporters of the poor," the alliance said.

The National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy has been spearheading the opposition to the current authorities since Morsi's ouster last year.

Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, was removed by the military last summer following three days of protests against his single year in power.

Former army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, widely seen as the architect of Morsi's ouster and subsequent imprisonment, was declared winner of a presidential poll held in May.
