A prominent Kenyan Muslim cleric was shot dead late Tuesday by unknown assailants in the coastal city of Mombasa, a senior police official has said.
Mombasa Police Chief Robert Kitur said that Imam Marangi was shot dead outside the Bilal Mosque in Likoni, a suburb outside off the Mombasa Island.
"Imam Marangi was shot several times outside the Likoni Mosque. He had just finished the night prayers and was on his way home when the gunmen shot him” Kitur told Anadolu Agency.
Kitur said that the Muslim cleric died upon arrival at a local hospital.
Police have launched an investigation into the killing of the cleric.
Several Muslim clerics have been killed in recent years in Kenya.
In June, imam Mohammed Idris, chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), was killed shortly after leaving mosque in Mombasa.
Sheikh Abubakar Shariff, an outspoken Muslim cleric popularly known as "Makaburi," was killed in Mombasa on April 1.
He was killed in the same place – and in the same manner – as two other Muslim scholars. Sheikh Ibrahim Omar and Sheikh Aboud Rogo were both killed in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
