Nigeria troops killed in Boko Haram rocket attack

At least two Nigerian soldiers were killed and six others injured when Boko Haram members launched a surprise rocket attack on their convoy in Nigeria's northeastern Borno State, according to local sources.

"Two of our colleagues died in the attack," an army official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told on Wednesday.

"Six soldiers and three vigilante members were also injured," he said.

According to the army official, the attack occurred on Monday near Baga, a town recently liberated from Boko Haram, which had captured it in a deadly attack in early January.

He said troops and members of local vigilante groups were escorting Baga residents – who were displaced during the January attack – on a tour of the town, when they ran into "what was clearly an ambush."

The Nigerian army has yet to officially comment on the reports.

"I will get back to you when I get a response from my colleagues," army spokesman Sani Usman told AA when asked for comment.

Jubrin Gunda, spokesman for a local vigilante group, however, confirmed the attack.

"Security agents and our men were providing security for Baga people who were on tour of their liberated town, when Boko Haram terrorists ambushed them," he told by phone.

"There were casualties among the troops. But some of the militants also died because troops returned fire and pursued them," said Gunda.

He stopped short, however, of providing an exact death toll.
