Nigeria's former president Olusegun Obasanjo has announced suspending his membership in the country's crisis-ridden ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP).

"I believe that on no account should a known habitual criminal that is wanted abroad to face criminal charges leveled against him be extolled as a political leader in a respectable and wholesome nation-building political party," Obasanjo wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan and PDP National Chairman Bamanga Tukur.

"Buruji Kashamu has been so extolled in PDP in South-West geopolitical zone, which I personally find unsavoury," he fumed.

Obasanjo attached to his letter, which was leaked to the media on Saturday, what he described as documents "that clearly indicate that your extolled PDP Zonal Leader in the south-west zone of Nigeria and an indigene of Ogun State is, to say the least, not a credit to the party as a member, let alone being a zonal leader."

"I cannot and I will not subscribe to a wanted habitual criminal being installed as my zonal leader in the party; a criminal for whom extradition has been requested by the US government," said the former president.

"I will consider withdrawing my activity with PDP at local, state, zonal and national levels until the anomalous and shameful situation is corrected."

It was the second letter Obasanjo, a former military ruler and two-term civilian president between 1999 and 2007, has written in a space of one month to the president.

In the first letter, dated December 2, Obasanjo accused Jonathan, his political godson, of running a "clannish and divisive" government neck-deep in corruption.

Obasanjo was instrumental to Jonathan's emergence first as a vice president in 2007 and then as president in 2011.

But both men have since parted ways reportedly over disagreements over how Jonathan runs the country.
