The Egyptian army announced late Saturday that an army officer and five soldiers were killed by smugglers and outlaws in southwestern Egypt.
Army spokesman Ahmed Ali said the six were gunned down in an attack on their patrol in a mountainous area of the New Valley province.
He described the attack as a reprisal for Egyptian border guards' successful efforts in foiling the smuggling of huge amounts of arms and narcotics into Egypt and the arrest of 68 smugglers during May.
Ali said the Egyptian army had mounted a manhunt to track down the assailants.
But he did not clarify on when the attack had taken place or whether there were any casualties among the smugglers.Last Mod: 01 Haziran 2014, 09:45
