One person was killed on Tuesday and 11 others injured in an airstrike by forces loyal to former military general Khalifa Haftar near the border with Tunisia, a local official has said.

The airstrike, launched on Tuesday morning, targeted a food supplies' storeroom in the northwestern Zuarah city, Hafiz Bin Sasi, the city's local chief, told The Anadolu Agency.

Bin Sasi said that the building sustained serious damage and much of the food supplies have been destroyed.

For several days now, Haftar's forces and armed groups from the Dawn of Libya umbrella militia have been fighting for control of two military bases near the Tunisian border.

Haftar's forces have struck several sites in capital Tripoli and nearby western Libyan cities, said by sources close to the retired commander to have contained weapons belonging to Dawn of Libya.

Clashes first erupted between the two camps in mid-October, whereas later, Libya's internationally-recognized House of Representatives declared its support for Haftar's operation against the militias.

Libya has been dogged by political instability since the 2011 ouster and death of long-ruling strongman Muammar Gaddafi.

Ever since, rival militias have frequently locked horns, often bringing violence to the country's main cities, especially Benghazi and capital Tripoli.
