A policeman was gunned down on Sunday in an attack by unidentified gunmen on a police station in northern Sinai, a security source told Anadolu Agency.

The militants showered a local police station with bullets in Arish, the capital city of North Sinai province, killing a non-commissioned officer, the source said.

The attackers fled the scene following the shooting, he added.

Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip, has seen almost daily attacks by unknown gunmen since the army's July 3 ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi.

The Egyptian army is currently carrying out what is described as the largest military operation in the province with the stated aim of combating "militancy and terrorism".

Sunday's attack came as the country celebrates the 40th anniversary of its victory over Israel.

Rival protests by Morsi supporters and opponents are expected in several areas across the country.
