G4S, a private British security contractor, has been removed from the Mangaung prison by the South African government after ‘losing control’ of the facility. The South African government is set to launch an investigation into cases of abuse.
Inmates have complained that they had been subjected to electric shocks and forced injections.
The BBC has revealed secret video footage of apparant abuses taking place in the prison, with prisoners complaining of being subjected to electric shocks and forced injections. Inmates are also said to be suffering from broken limbs and other serious injuries.
Meanwhile, a BBC correspondent mentioned that G4S had blamed the violence on a labor dispute between the company and employees. Already the prison has seen more than 300 guards lose their jobs this month after going on an unofficial strike.
G4S has also claimed that injections were prescribed and administered by medical staff, not G4S staff.
A spokeman fort he company also said: "If anything specific is brought to us that is a specific case you have my commitment and the rest of our organisation's commitment that we'll investigate fully and completely."Last Mod: 28 Ekim 2013, 13:35
