The National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, the main support bloc of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, has called on supporters to stage Wednesday demonstrations outside social clubs reserved for policemen, military personnel and judges.

In a Monday statement, the pro-Morsi alliance said the new demonstrations came as part of a fresh week of rallies held to decry Morsi's ouster last July by the army.

It said the planned demonstrations were intended to illustrate public opposition to a presidential bid by former defense minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi – widely regarded as the driving force behind Morsi's ouster – and to demand the release of thousands of political prisoners.

The alliance, composed of several parties and anti-coup groups, said it had selected police, army and judges clubs as the sites for this week's planned demonstrations in order to protest what it called Egypt's "corrupt" social class.

It is the first time the alliance has called on supporters to demonstrate outside such clubs.

In its statement, the alliance also lashed out at Egypt's current economic situation, saying the country's army-backed interim authorities had failed to provide citizens with basic services in the health, educational and security fields.

The fresh series of protests will kick off one day before Egypt celebrates Sinai Liberation Day marking Israel's 1982 military pullout from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
