Police and citizens clashed again on Friday in Tunisia's southern city of Douz following the arrest of several people suspected of involvement in Wednesday's arson attack on a local police station and a spate of recent attacks on policemen.
"Confrontations broke out again this afternoon after a group of people attacked police who have been deployed in different parts of the city since the violence first broke out," Al-Hadi Massoud, head of the Douz police station, told Anadolu Agency.
Three policemen in Douz were injured in clashes that erupted Wednesday night between police and "religious radicals," according to security sources.
The violence followed the arrest of a man suspected of involvement in a number of recent infringements.
Security sources added that a number of people who took part in the clashes had been arrested.
Local rights activist Maher al-Faqih accused security forces of "committing violations and provoking protesters" during the melee.
He told AA that police had fired teargas in residential neighborhoods for no apparent reason on Thursday night.
The Tunisian government has yet to comment on the violence.Last Mod: 13 Eylül 2014, 09:52
