The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) said on Wednesday it had responded to an attack by rebel forces of the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) on the village of Al-Sidra in the state of North Kordofan.

"We emphasize that all the area of Sidra is now enjoying security and stability, and that the entire area is under the full control of the SAF which is still chasing the remnants of the rebels,” SAF official spokesman Col. Al-Swarmy Khaled Saad said in a statement obtained by Anadolu Agency.

He said the SRF rebels attacked the village of Al-Sidra in the morning with the purpose of looting the properties of the citizens.

The army forces engaged the rebels and inflicted huge losses on the rebels in equipment and spirits, forcing the remnants to flee.

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), a Darfurian group which is part of the SRF rebel alliance, said it attacked a military convoy in Al-Sidra village.

In a statement on its website, JEM claimed to have inflicted heavy losses onto the government forces in equipment and spirits.

The attack comes days before a Khartoum deadline to halt South Sudan oil flow through its territories, over allegations it is backing the rebels.

JEM took up arms against the government in 2001 on accusations of discrimination and marginalization.

Founded by Khalil Ibrahim, who was killed by the government forces in September 2011, the group is now led by his brother Gibril.

JEM, considered a splinter group from the Islamic Movement, mounted a daring attack on the Sudanese capital Khartoum in May 2008.

JEM is part of the SRF, an umbrella coalition of rebel groups in Darfur, South Kordofan, Blue Nile and eastern Sudan, whose leaders want to topple the ruling National Congress Party regime and establish a secular, liberal state.
