At least three people were gunned down late on Sunday by unidentified militants in Likoni, a division of Kenya's Mombasa County.

Ten more people were also wounded in the shootout, Mombasa County authorities said.

"Our officers managed to overpower the gunmen who managed to escape toward the South Coast," County Commissioner Nelson Marwa told Anadolu Agency on the phone.

"Likoni police station has confirmed three deaths until this moment," Marwa added.

Kenyan police is yet to confirm if the attack was terror-related or anything else.

Likoni is the stronghold of the separatist group Mombasa Republican Council, which has been demanding separation from the coast region for some time now.

The group has been coordinating with the Somali militant group Al-Shabaab, according to some intelligence reports.

Bakari Jumanne, a resident of Likoni and an eyewitness, said the gunmen carrying out the attack were uniform.

"There were ten of them who were shooting everywhere," Jumanne told AA. "Everybody present fled to safety behind the shops and the mosque, but fighting went on for more than 20 minutes "

Several members of the Mombasa Republican Council were arrested last week.

They were charged with having links with a recent attack that took place in Lamu town, northeast of Mombasa. The attack left at least 87 people dead.

Likoni has been the scene of some terrorist attacks by suspected Al-shabaab militants in the past.

In March, gunmen stormed into a town church and killed four people inside.
