Police have foiled a terrorist plot to target Tunisian security sites, vital institutions and senior politicians with the aim of derailing upcoming polls, the Interior Ministry said Thursday.
"We have managed to arrest 26 terrorists who were bringing in arms shipments from Libya with the aim of fomenting chaos before the elections," Interior Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui said at a Thursday press conference.
Authorities are currently hunting for five more members of the same group who still remain at large, he added.
Aroui went on to note that a unit from Tunisia's National Guard, which operates under the Interior Ministry, had killed two "terrorists" in the western Kasserine province.
National Guard personnel also managed to seize weapons and maps found in the possession of the two slain militants.
The two militants, he asserted, had belonged to the same terrorist group that targeted the home of the interior minister in May and killed 15 Tunisian soldiers in the Jebel ech Chambi region in July.
