Two Egyptian army troops were killed and another was injured in an attack on an army patrol near the canal city of Ismailia on Friday.
Gunmen driving a 4x4 car opened fire on the army on Ismailia-Cairo desert road.
Attackers fled the scene after exchanging fire with army troops.
A manhunt has been launched for the attackers.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Egyptian authorities are yet to comment.
Attacks have grown against army and police forces since the July 3 ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi by the powerful military.
