The U.S. on Monday launched an airstrike on a senior al-Shabaab leader in Somalia, according to the Pentagon.

"The strike took place in the vicinity of Saakow, Somalia. At this time, we do not assess there to be any civilian or bystander casualties," Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement. "We are assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information, when appropriate, as details become available."

The strike follows the weekend arrest of al-Shabaab intelligence chief Zakariya Ismail Hersi near the Kenyan border. Hersi had a $3 million U.S. bounty on his head at the time of his capture.

The group has been attempting to oust the Western- and African Union-backed central government in Mogadishu. Government troops backed by African Union forces made gains against the armed groups earlier this year, driving the group from many of its strongholds in the country.
